Over the summer, we have had the incredible opportunity to undertake our work experience placement with Pro MGA Global Solutions, and it has been an experience that has genuinely changed our perception of both the insurance industry and the career opportunities within it.

Before starting our placement, we shared the common misconception that insurance was a relatively uninteresting sector, one largely focused on claims and paperwork. However, after spending a week immersed in the industry, meeting professionals from across the market and gaining first-hand experience of how insurance businesses operate, we can confidently say that our views have completely changed.

From day one, the team at Pro MGA Global Solutions welcomed us and provided us with unparalleled exposure to the world of insurance. Despite their busy schedules, everyone took the time to share their knowledge, answer our questions and help us develop our understanding of the sector. We were also fortunate to visit and meet with a number of other insurance businesses, including leading MGAs, all of whom were incredibly generous with their time and expertise.

The week was packed with meetings, company visits and discussions that gave us a detailed insight into how MGAs, insurers and brokers work together. We learned about everything from arranging client meetings and securing new business opportunities to the regulatory and compliance procedures required to meet the standards set by organisations such as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

What impressed us most was the level of expertise, professionalism and collaboration that exists across the industry. Through meetings, one-to-one conversations and practical activities, we were able to see how people from different businesses and specialisms work together to solve problems, build relationships and drive success. It quickly became clear that insurance is a people-focused industry built on trust, expertise and innovation.

Throughout the week, we gained an enormous amount of knowledge. We were introduced to industry terminology and acronyms such as DD and PI, learned about the different ways companies conduct due diligence, explored the role of compliance within the insurance sector and discovered how organisations are beginning to utilise Artificial Intelligence to improve processes and support business growth.

We also learned about the wide range of products offered by MGAs and gained a deeper understanding of how underwriters use their market knowledge and relationships to help create solutions for clients. Before this experience, many of these concepts were entirely unfamiliar to us, but thanks to the guidance of the professionals we met, we have left with a much broader understanding of the industry and its many career opportunities.

One of the highlights of the week was undoubtedly our visit to Lloyd’s of London. Walking through one of the most iconic institutions in the global insurance market was both fascinating and inspiring. Seeing the bustling underwriting floor, learning about its rich history, visiting the Old Library and observing the historic artwork and architecture gave us a real appreciation for Lloyd’s significance within the industry.

The visit not only helped us understand the scale and history of the insurance market but also provided an experience that we will remember for years to come.

Another aspect that made our placement particularly memorable was the trust and responsibility that Pro MGA gave us. Having access to our own workstations and technology allowed us to conduct independent research alongside the structured learning opportunities provided throughout the week. This helped us feel genuinely involved and gave us a more realistic understanding of what working within a professional business environment is like.

Whilst the knowledge and experiences we gained were invaluable, the thing that made the biggest impression on us was the people. Across every company we visited, we encountered individuals who were welcoming, supportive and passionate about what they do. At Pro MGA in particular, there was a clear culture of teamwork, friendliness and mutual respect that made us feel comfortable from the moment we arrived.

Everyone was willing to answer our questions, no matter how basic they may have seemed, and explain complex concepts in a way that was easy to understand. Their patience, professionalism and willingness to share their knowledge helped us build both our confidence and our understanding throughout the week.

This placement has shown us that insurance is far more dynamic, varied and engaging than we ever imagined. It is an industry driven by relationships, expertise, innovation and collaboration, and one that offers a wide range of opportunities for people from all backgrounds.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone at Pro MGA Global Solutions, as well as the associated fast-growing MGAs and all the other professionals who took the time to meet with us throughout the week. Your support, guidance and enthusiasm made this an unforgettable experience and have given us a genuine appreciation for the insurance industry.

Thank you for making this such a valuable and enjoyable week. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity and wish everyone at Pro MGA Global Solutions continued success in the future.
